Moya at the Roundhouse
Rising singing sensation Moya quietly released her debut album Lost and Found last year, which attracted many new listeners, who compared her soulful, retro style to that of Emeli Sandé, Duffy and Adele. Having toured with the likes of Blondie, Karima Francis and Rod Stewart, the pop-soul songstress from Poole has accomplished greatness in the last two years. At the first of two exclusive dates at the Roundhouse in Camden, London, Moya demonstrated why she’s currently making waves on the music scene.
Taking to the stage in tailored trousers and a cropped polo, Moya’s suave, vintage look reflected her soulful singing style. While some of the material from the spectacular Lost and Found was unknown to the crowd, the songs they are more familiar with were received very well. Pop number Making Me Fall evoked a joyous response from the audience, who bop and sing along, but Moya shines most with her remarkable, soulful vocals in the infectious Come and Get It, which has the crowd jibing to its old-school groove – and it is apparent where the vocal comparisons to Emeli Sandé have come from. The acoustics of the Roundhouse were perfect for the live backing band and Moya’s powerful vocals echoed around the venue, creating an overwhelming atmosphere that showcased her captivating voice.
The set seemed slightly short-lived but the crowd left impressed, having heard all they needed to know that the spotlight would no doubt be on Moya next year as one of the next big female songstresses. If you’ve not heard of her yet, you certainly will be hearing from her soon.
