David Koma appointed artistic director for Thierry Mugler
Since the departure of Nicola Formichetti in April of this year, the Thierry Mugler brand has been sourcing a creative director and it was announced this month that Georgian-born and London-based David Koma would be taking over the creative fashion reins.
The French power house was started up by its namesake Thierry Mugler who moved to Paris at the age of 24 and worked as a freelance designer before creating his first collection in the 70s. By the 90s the Mugler name had become known world-wide in the world of fashion, and his trademark shape of structured shoulder with a sleek silhouette became instantly recognisable. As time has gone on, the Mugler label has remained relevant and fashionable but has never lost that bold outline we all know and love.
Now in 2013, they will have a new face at the head of the creative table and to some the 28-year-old fashion designer was a surprise choice, but the brains behind the decision advises that they wish to modernise Mugler and they believe Koma can do so.
Koma will step up in January 2014 and will showcase his first pre-collection in June with his designs taking to catwalk in September during Paris Fashion Week.
Koma’s current creations have been seen on the likes of Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence and Miranda Kerr and it is clear to see he shares some similarity with the Mugler label. The shapes often have structure against a sleek shape and are worn by women of style and sophistication; the materials are often quirky with the colour then remaining muted.
Whether or not David Koma is what people expected he is sure to bring some intrigue and style to the already fabulous Thierry Mugler power house. Everybody is sure to be on tenterhooks in the New Year as we wait patiently to see what his first fashion line will offer.
