An interview with London-based jewellery brand MMzS
Full of bright, bold and bashful colour, MMzS jewellery design is a London-based jewellery brand, which designs individual pieces to be worn in everyday life. Created not just for synthetic purposes, but to bring a smile to the wearer’s face, the craftsmanship that goes into each of the pieces oozes elegance and style. After we discovered MMzS jewellery design, we couldn’t wait to get in touch with them and little did we know how lovely it would be to talk to the owner!
Tell us a little about yourself
I have always been creative and enjoyed designing things, but I never actually contemplated having a creative profession. After seven years of being an employee in a large (un-creative) company, I was definitely ready to run my own small business where I could shape everything according to my own style, and create beautiful things that would make me smile. Luckily, my pieces also make other people smile too.
How did MMzS begin?
When I was made redundant in 2008, I took the opportunity to re-think what I really wanted to do with my life and what actually makes me happy. Design had always been a great interest of mine and London turned out to be the perfect location for anything jewellery related. After studying jewellery design at the GIA in London, MMzS was founded in 2009. I am working with highly skilled jewellers in Hatton Garden who make the pieces according to my designs. Recently, I was very lucky to meet a lovely and patient leather craftsman with ten years of experience in manufacturing luxury leather goods in Italy. His skill set and attention to detail helps me realise my designs.
What are your inspirations for your pieces?
My creative process is quite organic. It is usually a material, a structure or a colour I see that sticks in my mind and a design develops from that. Once an idea has taken shape in my mind, I start drawing. I always carry my small sketchbook with me. Sometimes a design is finished in ten minutes; sometimes it develops over several weeks.
Wow! We love that it can take such a short, or long period of time to design one of your beautiful creations! Which is your favourite piece from the collection?
While I love and wear all my pieces, my current favourite is the exotic leather bracelet with silver toggle. I wear one every day – I have one in every colour!
What would you say is a “must-have” piece of jewellery?
In my mind, a must-have would be simple diamond stud earrings – they can be dressed up or down but always add a little bit of sparkle.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
Making my first sale to a client that was not a friend. While I am so happy that many of my friends are my clients and wear my pieces, it is an amazing feeling when a stranger buys a piece.
How would you describe your own style?
My style is quite classic and minimalist – but I always like to add a little bit of colour and sparkle.
What is your favourite place in London?
There are a few perfect places, depending on the mood: reading the Sunday papers at a small café on Elizabeth Street, dinner at Sake No Hana or brunch at the Wolseley.
What does the future hold for MMzS?
I am working on growing my business further. It is still small but I am taking my time and doing it my way.
