NYFW – Trina Turk A/W 2014 collection
To say that it’s cold in New York City this week is to simply make an understatement. It is freezing. The avenues are filled with gelid gusts of wind and the sidewalks are trimmed with icy, matted down snow that by now has completely lost its pretty whiteness. There are fur and puffy coats walking around and hats, gloves and boots are an absolute must for those who want to venture out.
Yet, in at least one place in the city, thanks to the Trina Turk and Mr Turk show, the wintery weather was put on hold for at least one hour, as some serious California sunshine and breeze was brought into the basement of the HUB (Hudson Hotel) at the corner of 58th and 9th Avenue.
The Trina Turk and Mr Turk autumn/winter 2014 collection speaks of an autumn and winter season that is sunny, warm, good-humored and upbeat. It emanates a sense of youthful optimism and it is imbued with joyful creativity. Its vibrant colours, contrasting prints and textures create a relaxed yet carefully put together California style.
The inspiration behind the collection comes from the city of Los Angeles, with its unique pulse and multicultural vibe that according to the designers allow for “uncensored styling”. Trina Turk and her husband Jonathan Skow (designer of the menswear line Mr Turk) invite us to join them for a drive, west of Sunset Blvd, through the city, from Silverlake to the sea. In this ride we can’t help but notice LA’s “verdant neighbourhoods” and cityscapes that, in the collection, find their full expression in the juxtaposition of patterns and textures.
It is refreshing to see the interplay of colours and lines. The designers explain that “mineral greys, taupe, navy and camel are popped by loganberry, lipstick and the burnt orange of a sunset sky”.
Founded in 1995 by Trina and her husband, the brand now has expanded to include elegant women’s ready-to-wear, accessories, swimwear, recreation/activewear, a Mr Turk menswear line, footwear, jewellery collection, residential décor and textiles. In yesterday’s show Trina Turk bags were introduced.
It is truly enjoyable to experience the overall sense of playfulness and chic fun that this collection emanates.
