BAFTAs 2014: nominated short films

With feature films such as Gravity, 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle dominating the EE British Academy Film Awards this year, we must not forget the equally as important short animations and short films nominated to receive awards. The BAFTA nominations for best Short Film and Short Animation are as follows:

 

Island Queen

A comic coming-of-age tale about a 30-year-old small islander who has never left her hometown. Living with her parents and working a dead-end job, Miriam is yet to fully grasp the concept of becoming a responsible adult, and so begins her journey to adulthood by visiting a local sperm bank with a somewhat deluded goal of becoming a “modern” mother to a fatherless child.

Orbit Ever After

Beautifully set in space, Orbit Ever After is a love story about a boy who spends his life cooped up in a rickety spaceship, orbiting the earth with his family. One day Nigel falls in love with a girl who is spinning around the earth the wrong way round…

Keeping Up with the Joneses

Celia is taken hostage by two criminals who are searching for her husband. At first she is determined to conceal his whereabouts until she discovers a few unpleasant truths that make her change her mind.

Room 8

A surrealist film about an inmate in a Russian prison who tries to escape when he discovers the content of a mysterious box. A brilliant play on the art of optical illusions.

Sea View

A tale of the innocence of a young girl who deals with the hard-hitting reality of a brief affair with an older man. Watch out for a very strong performance from Eloise Smyth.

Everything I Can See from Here

A brightly produced short animation about a football game that goes terribly wrong when an uninvited guest decides to play.

A film about self doubt and that little voice inside your head that keeps saying “no”.

Sleeping with the Fishes

Introvert fishmonger Sonja appears to be more comfortable with her fish than her customers until she meets a young man with a rather fishy face, with whom she develops a deep-sea romance.

Winners will be announced at the BAFTAs on Sunday 16^th February. BAFTA nominated short films and short animations will be screened in cinemas nationwide from 28^th February 2014.
