Interview with Dalia Daou of Daou Jewellery
If you’re looking for that special gift for someone, Dalia Daou might have just what you’re looking for.
They have produced two art deco-inspired necklaces that are unique enough to make a statement without being overwhelming. The focus lays on the central brilliant diamond, gemstone or personalised engraving. The inspiration behind these is science and sentiment.
The new Star collection is a modern geometric art deco style. The sculptural design catches and reflects the light from its highly polished facets that appear to be in motion around the central brilliant diamond, gemstone or personalised engraving.
The gorgeous designs are handmade in 18ct white and yellow gold in London’s Hatton Garden. We had the chance to ask Dalia Daou a few questions about the collection.
What is the inspiration behind the jewellery?
Dalia Daou: The debut Star collection by Dalia Daou has been inspired by many collected ideas coming together while preparing to launch Daou jewellery in London.
The symbolism of the bright eternal star is personal to everyone, from the expression “you’re a star” to the unique, radiant and noble qualities implied, and the star was perfect to present the Daou name, which means light. My design represents the star in an elegant, distinct, modern 1930s deco style, reminiscent of the era Daou jewellery was originally founded.
The influence of Dalia’s physics education and an understanding of stars, the properties of light and crystals’ structures can be seen in the geometric, stunning three dimensional sculptural design which catches and reflects the light from its highly polished facets that appear to be in motion around the central brilliant diamond, gemstone or personalised engraving. The full effect is best appreciated when you see the star worn in reality.
The recognition of the star design being exhibited at the “jewellery Oscars”, the Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council Awards 2013 encouraged the creation of the collection to be produced by master fine jewellery craftsmen in London’s prestigious Hatton Garden in precious 18ct white and yellow gold, brilliant cut diamonds or coloured gemstones.
What makes Daou jewellery different from other brands?
Daou actually has been known for original, beautiful fine jewellery designs since 1930. Daou’s long and notable, but interrupted, history as a jeweller to sovereigns, stars and society is due to the beauty, colour, life and innovation of the Daou jewellery designs, which has always made it distinctive from the classic styles of the times. From 1930s society, to celebrities of the 60s and 70s such as Brigitte Bardot, and even a royal appointment leading to Daou jewellery gifted to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England, and Prince Rainier of Monaco among others.
Dalia is bringing back the brand with this unique heritage, creative genes, and a familiarity for fine precious jewels, quality and the important sculptural considerations of how pieces will be worn, and with the influence of her own experiences.
Will you be introducing more designs in the near future?
I am working on colourful new designs which will be ready at the beginning of the summer. I have many different ideas and inspirations from travel, the beauty in natural forms and science, the world of culture, art and historical and modern design, so each fine jewellery design shows distinct styles and stories. Whether they are the sinuous organic shapes of a flower or the sharp geometric lines of the stars there is always a thoughtful sculptural design in the Daou jewellery pieces. I’m confident my original and elegant designs will be treasured and worn with great pleasure.
