Blood Orange at the 100 Club

Converse Gigs at the 100 Club is back with its first show of 2014, this time in association with the FADER, it seems that they have chosen the perfect venue. They also chose a fantastic act. The combination of the 100 Club on Oxford Street and Blood Orange was always going to be a good one.    

Even at a mere 28 years old Devonté Hynes is certainly somewhat of an old timer in the music scene. Having started out in a band called Test Icicles a decade ago, he has fast built up a creditable reputation as Lightspeed Champion and now Blood Orange. Having worked with acts such as Florence and the Machine, Solange Knowles and The Chemical Brothers, it’s no wonder he has been voted one of the coolest people in rock.

Swaggering around and demonstrating some of the best dance moves of the night in his famous orange cap, Blood Orange pulled off an effortless set. Joined by the outstanding vocals of Samantha Urbani, Hynes and his band were engaging throughout. You’re Not Good Enough provided the highlight of the gig as the adoring crowd jumped around in excitement and rapper Skepta made a surprise appearance with a superb rendition of High Street. The interaction between the band members was captivating as they appeared to be feeling every minute of the gig especially during instrumental track Uncle Ace and this enjoyment certainly rubbed off on to the crowd. The atmosphere was that of pure delight and appreciation for these great musicians. Every single person was fully engaged, barely taking their eyes off the stage. An indication that Blood Orange has the stage presence many don’t.

A brilliant night of entertainment and a fabulous performance by Blood Orange and his band.
