Young Kato at The Garage
We’ve seen the rise of the “indie boy band” over the past few years in the UK with the likes of The 1975, Don Broco and Swim Deep. British six-piece Young Kato are set to be the next big stars on the indie pop scene; they already have gained a strong following of teenage girls and will support You Me at Six on their upcoming tour nationwide. We stopped by at The Garage in Islington to “drink, dance and play” with the boys.
The venue was full to the brim with mostly teenage fans, and the atmosphere excitable as we waited for the band to emerge. Loud screams and applause echoed around The Garage as the lights went up on the fresh-faced Young Kato and frontman Tommy Wright, who gave off an effortlessly cool persona. Wright’s vocals are particularly striking and compliment the Hadouken-esque indie-meets-electronica sound, resulting in what could easily be the love child of Bastille and Morrissey. Popular teenage anthem Drink, Dance, Play was met with the most excitement from the crowd, who bounced and moshed along to the chiming synths and poppy guitar riffs, chanting with Wright “WO-OH-OH -OOOOAH, we drink and we dance and I finally take off your CLO-O-O-OOOTHES”.
After an energetic set – which included new single Help Yourself – the down-to-earth band stayed around to greet fans, sign merchandise and take photos with everybody. If this show was anything to go by, Young Kato are set to explode on the UK indie scene, and we can’t wait to hear how they progress
