The Black Keys – Turn Blue
From the striking, soul-infused bassline and roaring guitar solo of the very first song, Weight of Love, to Gotta Get Away and its funky vibrant beats, The Black Keys’ new album Turning Blue is sublime. Each song is full of depth and passion as the Akron duo take this record to new heights, instantly creating masterpieces that listeners will enjoy for a very long time.
Their first single Fever is full of dynamic soulful beats, beautifully infused with Dan Auerbach’s enigmatic vocals, which is continued in later songs such as 10 Lovers. Their stand-out song must arguably be Bullet in the Brain as the vocals, guitar skills and lyrics fit perfectly with Patrick Carney’s wonderfully delightful drumming – impossible to stop listening to.
Endearing moments shine throughout, captured beautifully through In Our Prime as Auerbach’s ghostly tones reminisce on his past mistakes and memories: a universal message any listener can instantly connect to. The final track Gotta Get Away is a wonderful way to end a stunning album; the funky beat creates a carefree vibe as the duo reach the ultimate conclusion.
Ultimately, a truly successful album is achieved when the listener is able to recognise the development from the last project – something that is done here. The haunting vocals and killer instrumentals remind fans why these guys are a force to be beckoned with, while their new material is sure to attract a vast range, all down to its sheer diversity and passion. Time truly is a magical thing, and from their last endeavour the duo have created an album that will stand the test of time.
