Singing nun Suor Cristina wins The Voice in Italy – watch the video
The singing nun who became an internet sensation has finished as the newest, and perhaps most unexpected, winner of The Voice of Italy.
25-year old Suor Cristina Scuccia was crowned champion after making it to the final four with her energetic renditions of songs such as Cindy Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and Alicia Keys’ No One – the latter watched by over 50 million people on YouTube. And her fame is set to soar even further after beating out fellow contestants Tommaso Pini, Giacomo Voli and Giorgia Pino on the final night of the televised contest.
Since first appearing on the show, Suor Cristina had quickly become a strong fan favourite in the largely catholic practicing Italy, performing her songs on stage while adorning traditional nun’s clothing and wearing a crucifix. Her practices still remain wholly important to her. Before the final, Scuccia said her aim was “to make people understand that the church is everywhere and can be with everyone.”
Entering the final night of the competition a strong favourite to win, Scuccia didn’t let the faithful down and picked up 62% of the votes after her final performance. Whatever is next for the spirited nun, she has already said she’ll “continue to sing wherever the Lord calls me”.
