Ethical fashion, where it all began: Komodo

Before ethical fashion became fashionable, there was London based fashion house Komodo – green by nature – which can be called the mother shop of ethical fashion. Joe Komodo founded Komodo in 1988, two decades before the “eco-fashion” moment gained momentum. The company is still making great inroads in this area bringing sustainable fashion to whole new levels. Joe’s interest in ethical fashion grew during his days as a true back-packing vagabond. His travels took him to places like Bali and Kathmandu, where he and his friends met local artisans and were left with wide-eye wonderment at their talents.

Komodo thus began as a fashion lifestyle brand that makes sure to keep the environment and foot soldiers of the fashion industry – the actual artisans and tailors – happy. Now, more than two decades later, the brand still works with the same family-run factories in Kathmandu and Bali they started with. Their raw materials are as original as their ideas; organic cotton, hemp, soya fibre, rustic silk and recycled rubber are just some of things the brand uses.

Who knew anti-establishment would look so cool?  You just have to take a look at this Muse denim dress (£85). Made of lightweight organic hemp and cotton, it is sophisticated, easy and fun. We also like these tribal Sobel shorts (£45); a perfect way to greet spring, it is made of lightweight Rayon.  This Elly cropped jacket (Sale price £25) is also another favourite, a prefect item, which can be dressed up or down, made of organic cotton, wool and hemp.
