The Antlers – Familiars
In this day, it is truly hard to find a band that captures even as essence of rock, so it is a great pleasure that this is what is produced from The Antlers’ new album, Familiars.
Opening track, Palace sets the overall tone that is enchanting and inviting for the listener; there is a genuine sense of interest that one cannot simply ignore. The stunning sounds of the piano are heightened through the gentleness of the vocals, adding a sense of tranquillity to the piece that is no way boring. One thing that is certain with this band is that their delicacy and focus on the songs, without gimmicks, sets them apart from other alternative bands as one to look out for.
Every track has an element of darkness that takes the listener on a journey of self-discovery that can only be described as stunning. Perhaps their standout song, Döppelganger best highlights this as the rich tones and enigmatic instrumentals, along with the haunting lyrics, add something delightfully enchanting to the album.
What’s more fascinating is that is the record is far from over-produced (sometimes be a common feature in modern music). Their decision to strip back on songs, such as Hotel and Surrender, allows the listener to be taken on a journey from beginning to end. Their final song, Refuge, is the finishing touch to this masterpiece as the rawness and sheer power is evident through the striking lyrics, vocal and instrumentals.
Ultimately, one thing that is familiar with their new album is that there is passion throughout, something that many artists could take note from. They have created something that is much needed in today’s music.
