Bear in Heaven – Time Is Over One Day Old

Bear in Heaven are Jon Philpot, Adam Wills and Joe Stickney from Brooklyn. Although the members have changed since they first formed back in 2003, their dazed rock music is still the same, which may please some and dismay others.

Upon first listen, the opening track is very similar to the work of Teleman – except bigger and bolder. A similar rift and beat are obvious, but Bear in Heaven infuse the track with synths and scratches to take it to a kaleidoscopic level. Although the trio are a rock band, it’s clear that they take influence from a variety of other genres. With song titles like They Dream, The Sun and The Moon and The Stars and Time Between you know this isn’t your average rock album. There’s a psychedelic influence throughout and even some hints of reggae.

Throughout the spacy record you get the feeling it’s about to break into something great, but it never fully takes off. Some of the tracks are akin to White Lies and others more Cloud Control. Although it shows they’ve got a slight range in them, it’s nothing new to the music industry. They seem to have lost something from their predecessor I Love You, It’s Cool and it feels like you are listening to the journey to try and return to form.

Dissolve the Walls is more like an experiment than a song, with minimal lyrics and maximum white noise. Closing song You Don’t Need the World is all smooth synths and leaves it on an amiable note. Although there are some great songs on the record, there just aren’t enough of them.
