Fink at Koko
While you may not be able to name one of Fink’s tracks, we guarantee you’ll almost certainly have heard their music. The British band, fronted by Finn Greenhall, are essentially the musical champions of US television, having had their music featured on hit series such as The Walking Dead, CSI, Lie to Me, Covert Affairs, Mastercard adverts and Hollywood movies like Dear John. But when they’re not busy in the studio working on their next big sync or collaborating with musicians like John Legend, Fink are on the road performing their genius music all over Europe. Promoting the latest album Hard Believer, Fink graced Koko with their presence for a sold-out performance.
After some minimalist, heartfelt ballads from supporting act Douglas Dare, Greenhall and his band took to the stage, opening the set with the emotive Warm Shadow (a track which any Walking Dead fanatic will be familiar with). Greenhall’s voice resonated around the venue – his warm tones soft and yearning, but with a distinctly gravelly timbre that appeared to move the crowd in combination with the gentle sounds of the acoustic guitar.
Visually, the set was stunning, drawing the crowd in to a utopian world of tranquil ambience and composed beauty, with a semi-hypnotic pulsating light show. A performance of recent hit Looking Too Closely, taken from the new album, engaged the audience both sonically and visually, as did Perfect Darkness – but it was popular track This Is the Thing that appeared to stir them the most, evoking an almost spiritual connection between the band and their listeners.
As the bright lights dimmed and the last song played out, we were brought back to reality after our ethereal journey with Fink. All in all, it had been an incredibly moving musical experience that we won’t be forgetting any time soon.
