Taoray Wang catwalk show report for NYFW A/W 2015

Chinese designer Wang Tao presented her 2015 autumn/winter Taoray Wang signature collection at Mercedez Benz Fashion Week, in the wonderfully laid-out Salon at the Lincoln Center.  The line launched in September, and this season’s offering continues to combine strong shapes and soft contours to present a unique and artistic fashion statement.

The first model wore a cool grey pantsuit in wool plaid. The double breasted jacket buttoned at the waist, had a wide lapel, and was cropped in a gentle curve that tapered slightly toward the hips. The suit was worn with a long slim wool coat in a warmer tone of grey.

Grey plaids continued with a sleeveless knee length dress that seemed to fold up in front from the hip towards the waist, creating the impression of a boxy pocket that was accented by zippers on either side. A knee-length plaid dress with kimono sleeves, and a plaid jacket and skirt topped with a burgundy cashmere coat followed.

The rest of the show featured styles with silhouettes that emphasized dramatic and oversized elements in combination with soft and more natural styling, with slim-fitting and boxy styles side by side. Softly rounded contours seemed to arise from simple folds in square and circle-shaped dresses.

Large and small polka dot patterns, textured monochrome, and stylized camouflage punctuated a subtle palette of muted greys, blacks, burgundies, browns, greens and other fall colors. Fabrics and materials included vegan leather, textured wool, bonded fabric, and fur trim. Zippers occasionally added an accent on jackets or an element of surprise at the edge of a skirt pleat, but the strength of the collection lies in the soft, sculpted forms and subtle color combinations the designer creates.
