Son Jung Wan catwalk show report for NYFW A/W 2015

Inspired by the romantic mood of the works of 50s photographer Gordan Parks, Son Jung Wan’s Fall 2015 collection fused retro designs with a modern twist.

Warm mushroom and olive tones were interspersed with vibrant oranges and African violet to create unusual and distinct color combinations. Like Parks’ own work, the collection emphasized the beauty of natural motion, combined with themes of romance and femininity. Sumptuous furs and leathers nodded back to the glamorous 50s, while metallic fabrics and hand-knitted details added a modern touch. Silhouettes ranged from delicately feminine high waistlines and hour-glass dresses to broad shouldered jackets, and long lean trousers.

The juxtaposition of old and new made for timelessly chic combinations. An A-line russet-orange fur coat was paired with a metallic gold-shift dress and black boots while high-waisted teal trousers were matched with a opulent matching fur wrap. Particularly interesting in menswear were the subtle contrasts between metallic tones and fur knits, including a silver and metallic knit jacket with fur trim, over a two-tone grey wool turtleneck with matching trousers.

Overall, the soft silhouettes and lush colors proved a perfect match, presenting a refreshing and highly wearable take on the “modern-retro” theme.
