Academy of Art University catwalk show report for NYFW A/W 2015

For the autumn/winter 2015 season, the San Francisco-based Academy of Art University presented a total of ten collections by 15 designers, featuring several collaborations between fashion design and textile design students. The buzz word was transformation, with each collection focusing on manipulating fabrics and prints to explore different textures.

Styles and materials varied widely. Emmanuelle Clara Jones showcased a range of hip-hop inspired streetwear, which incorporated prints designed by textile designer Ghazaleh Khalifeh and featured linen trench coats and cotton separates in contrasting shades of red, green and black.

Wool was a popular fabric, with Christian Willman and Erin A.F. Milosevich separately presenting minimalist and highly constructed black and grey combinations, while Tam Nguyen designs showcased printed wool coats and dresses, capturing the appearance of weathered exteriors.

Particularly interesting were fashion design major Ozanhan Kayaoglu’s rusted-metal inspired pieces, created through a technique of dyeing wool with rusted metal.

The majority of the collections tended towards muted tones and loose silhouettes, with the exception of design duo Kevin C. Smith and Andrea Nyberg, whose menswear included bright blue wool jackets, nylon raincoats and matching trousers, adding a refreshing burst of colour to the runway.
