Madonna protests against Instagram’s no nudity policy by posting censored topless photo
Madonna has already hit the headlines once this year and it seems, this week, she has done it again. Not by falling off a stage this time, but instead posting a semi-nude photo of herself on Instagram.
The 56-year-old singer posted the black and white image on 3rd April, which showed a younger Madonna leant back on a rock, topless, with only a black strip censored across her breasts. The photograph was taken from her 1992 coffee table book, Sex. She captioned it “Why is it OK to show ass but not breasts? Drowning in the hypocrisy of social media #art for freedom #Unapologeticbitch.”
Madonna had previously uploaded a different topless picture, just two days before, which was immediately removed by Instagram.
Apparently outraged by the sexist policies, she is now one of the growing groups of celebrities trying to challenge the restrictions of the app. Instagram users are aware of the #free the nipple campaign, an ongoing movement over the past year. Questioning why male nipples are allowed to be posted, but female nipples are not, the campaign is championed by celebrities including Miley Cyrus and Rhianna, who have also recently challenged these censorship rules. Cara Delevingne has also been getting involved in trying to un-censor women’s bodies and we are expecting this social trend will continue to grow.
Instagram has been gossiped about a lot recently, especially for removing an image twice due to apparent “violation of community standards”. The image featured a woman lying down on a bed, fully clothed, with two spots of visible blood on her clothes and sheets. There was outrage on social media, as to why the image was removed and after finally being confronted enough times, the image was restored to the owner’s account.
We feel like this may only be the beginning of a larger campaign on the attitudes towards censorship and women’s bodies. We will keep you posted on any more developments or daring pictures that arise in the near future!
