Is grey dye taking the hair scene by storm?

“Going grey” has always been seen as a downside to getting older, going hand-in-hand with being seen as out of touch and unfashionable. However, in a roaring burst, the rise of the “silver foxes” has occurred in force. Back in 2009, Jay Manuel from TV reality show America’s Next Top Model infamously dyed his hair silver, a la Flash Gordon’s iconic pigment. New York-based stylist Oscar James did the handiwork and it became Manuel’s gorgeous trademark look which he sports to this day.

In autumn/winter 2011 Jean Paul Gaultier brought silver hair to the runways, with his models showing off hair coiffed into remarkable grey beehives. A year later, many A-list celebrities had started to invest in the silver locks look, such as Kelly Osborne and Kate Moss, a clear indication that grey was in fashion.

Fast-forward to 2015, grey has been revived and it’s hotter than ever, with celebrities and fashion bloggers alike converting to the way of the grey. From Marina Diamandis’ (otherwise known as Marina and the Diamonds) long hair and bangs look, to Rihanna’s long, luscious, silver dip dye and Pink’s short, wild, silver pixie crop.

And it’s not just for the famous! Fashion bloggers everywhere are making the dynamic change to their hair, like Ivania Carpio (a fashion blogger from the Netherlands) and Lauren Calaway (a blogger for Travelsize Supermodel, living in California).

Using grey dye doesn’t necessarily mean a full head of silver – fashion bloggers and celebrities are clashing it with colours to create an edgy, rock-n-roll feel, mixing grey with pastel colours or even their own natural hair colour.

One shortcoming of grey dye is the constant need to top it up as grey will wash out quickly, so finding the right shade for you is important. With options ranging from white, silver, platinum grey to greyish blue, combined with a bold lip colour and strong eye make-up, this trend will look incredible on any aspiring fashionista.
