Whistles teams up with Ebbets Field Flannels
With the fast growing trend in fashionable headgear, caps and snapbacks being seen everywhere, contemporary fashion label Whistles has collaborated with American athletic garment specialist Ebbets Field Flannels on a limited edition line of unisex flannel baseball caps.
Ebbets co-founder Jerry Cohen grew up in Brooklyn NY, proud of his childhood neighbourhood and the Brooklyn Dodgers’ heritage as the first major league team to integrate professional baseball in 1947. This brought about the flannel caps, uniting people in not only in having practical headwear but also with a sense of community, belonging to and fighting for a united team towards a common goal.
This iconic headwear brought about, in time, matching jerseys, shorts and socks to help people represent their support of different teams nationwide, as the cap itself took a more traditional meaning.
In the era of “polyester” Jerry was unimpressed with it and became obsessed with making traditional baseball flannel. While tracking some examples down he made a few shirts for himself. With the popularity of the shirts off his back, the company Ebbets Field Flannels was born, focusing on the non-major leagues, giving the company a unique niche and bringing relatively unknown baseball history to the public at large.
In 1990 Lisa Cooper joined to keep the business running and the company was featured in Sports Illustrated as a full page article. Soon after, celebrities like Spike Lee and David Letterman became parts of the growing customer base and to this day the brand has stayed true to its origins and still makes vintage jerseys, jackets and caps in America the old fashioned way, using original materials and manufacturing techniques.
With the newest collaboration between Ebbets Field Flannels and Whistles, the notion of heritage is being promoted heavily. The collection features two limited edition flannel caps, available in all-over navy or ecru with contrast piping and navy peak. Special details include a “W” appliqué logo and WXTS lettering. Both caps come with a pewter metal finish buckle, 100% leather tan adjustable backstrap and satin peak taping.
All of the profits from the collaboration will be donated to Trekstock and Whistles’ Canaltrek fundraising project.
