Belstaff collection presentation | LCM S/S 2016

The summer collection for Belstaff sees loyalty remain with the British forces, taking inspiration from the 7^th Armoured Division: The Desert Rats. Discovery and adventure pervade the line, fusing traditional cuts with contemporary fabric combinations.

With the foundation of the brand deriving from protection and practicality, S/S 2016 sees the label return to its roots, identifying with the functionality of its pieces. Renowned for winter outerwear, CEO Gavin Haig wants to drive Belstaff with focus on the lighter seasons. Concentrating on the use of material and weighting, the direction of the line is determined by the stipulations of summer; comfort in climate, heat and adventure.

Greeted by a desert jeep and army tent on the exterior, Old Billingsgate provided an arid setting for the presentation. Sand covered the display area with a backdrop of desert hills; the concept of unforgiving heat was apposite for the S/S 2016 collection. The irony did prevail of this British brand’s understanding of summer, with Old Billingsgate market’s view of London Tower Bridge and The Shard, concealed by clouds and drizzle.

Taping provided permanence within the collection, with the premise of parachute construction offering continuity throughout. Bonded cotton and taped edging created lightweight outerwear, novel to the label. The introduction of hand-crafted camouflage saw another theme take precedence, with each piece uniquely painted; the summer parka and pea coat presented contemporised adaptations of classic styles.

Superlight suede is combined with brown leather trim, creating hybridised jackets and capes. The material amalgamation produces a two-toned textural finish, exemplifying the quality of workmanship but also reinforcing the distinctive Belstaff style.

Washed denim jeans and chinos offered heavily pocketed trousers; featuring kneepad detailing and silver buttoned pouches, Belstaff provides a classier alternative to the white jean – surprisingly.
