Demoo Parkchoonmoo catwalk show report for NYFW S/S 2016

Tradition has always played a large role in fashion week. New York Fashion Week has it’s origins during WWII, where designers would show their newest collection to editors and buyers in large hotel rooms. In Demi Park’s newest collection for her line Demoo Park Choon Moo, both tradition and symbolism play a huge role.

Titled “Balance”, the spring/summer 2016 collection is inspired by the Cheongsachorong gauze lantern. The blue and red lantern has come to symbolize balance and new beginnings. These colors along with the yin and yang of black and white bring harmony into the collection. The monotone of the black and white along with the pops of bold color are signatures of Park’s aesthetic. The sporty, masculinity of the streamlined pieces was balanced by the more feminine flowy, gauze fabrics. Complimenting the streamlined silhouettes were the slicked back ponytails of the models. Music by avant garde singer Kissey fit perfectly with the avant garde designs.

Demi Park was born and raised in South Korea, where her parents owned a children’s apparel company. After receiving a degree in fashion design, she started Demoo Parkchoonmoo in Seoul in 1988. Later, she created her Parkchoonmoo line. Though she has been showing her Parkchoonmoo line in New York since 2010, this is the first time Demoo has been presented in the city.
