Who Killed Nelson Nutmeg?
10th October 2015 12.15pm at Cineworld Haymarket
Four kids go on an adventure to solve a crime at a campsite, when they think the camp’s mascot, Nelson Nutmeg, has been killed.
Who Killed Nelson Nutmeg? is a kids film through-and-through. Filmed on a micro-budget, part-funded by Kickstarter, and starring Bonnie Wright (Ginnie Weasley), the movie has its charm as it parodies several murder-mystery clichés by placing the kids in the roles of the adults. The film has a surprisingly good soundtrack, and has some genuinely funny moments throughout. One thing is for sure, and that is that the cast and crew seemed like they were enjoying every second of filming, as can be inferred from behind-the-scenes footage, and this energy certainly transfers well to the finished product.
It was a bold move, centring a film on four kids, and a move that rarely ends well, so a film that didn’t turn out to be a complete disaster can be considered a success. Who Killed Nelson Nutmeg? can be thoroughly enjoyed by children. If adults wish to partake: take a step back, squint a little, and remember it’s a kids’ film, then maybe it can be enjoyed by all the family.
The biggest issue, of course, is the acting. Being mostly first-time actors, the children are definitely not the problem, as they give it their all, and will hopefully go onto bigger and better things in the future. The dilemma here, is with the supporting adult actors, who seem to not want to even be there. This is especially evident with Bonnie Wright, who seems completely bored and uninterested every moment that she’s on screen. As Wright is probably the most esteemed actress related to this film – and subsequently has been plastered all over most of the promotional material – she could maybe try to care a little more.
