Pierce Brothers at The Garage
If there is one thing that can be said about the Pierce Brothers it’s that they do not lack any energy. The band, composed solely of twin brothers – Jack and Pat Pierce – give a wonderful performance on their only tour date in the UK. The duo originally found their sound busking on the streets of Melbourne; from these humble beginnings to a sell-out show at The Garage, London, and a recent signing to record label, Warner Music Australia, there is no doubt that these two cheeky smiles know how to entertain.
The night is overflowing with fun. There is nothing particularly new or groundbreaking about the band’s sound, though their delivery differs from many folk-pop acts in its sheer entertainment value. The stage is void of any over-the-top decorations or lighting, but rather centres the audience on the guitars and percussion – the space is an open playground for the band to unleash their songs. They are not shy toward the audience and aim to build a rapport early on, both brothers often grinning broadly during songs as they watch their material connect with the active audience. Highlights of the night are off their EP It’s My Fault and Geneviève. However, the stand-out track has to be Overdose, which not only gets the best reaction from the audience, it embodies what the band are about: folk, feelings and fun.
The band’s ability is proven in their talent for entertaining without a huge diversity in sound – the majority of the crowd knows all of the lyrics to almost every song and are moving (or at least swaying) the entire time. The band themselves are hearty performers and are more than happy to climb the side of the stage or place themselves inches away from the front of the crowd. Though the songs can sometimes be hard to identify from one another, overall the duo should be congratulated on an incredible live act. Even though the Pierce Brothers certainly won’t redefine the music scene in any way, they are certainly an act worthy of anybody’s Monday night.
