Giorgio Moroder at Koko
Giorgio Moroder may be 75 this year, but that didn’t stop him from filling up all four floors of Koko, one of London’s hottest venues. Having worked with some of the biggest names in music history and often credited for pioneering synth disco and electronic music, Moroder was back in town as never before.
From people who discoed through the 70s to budding electronic music enthusiasts, the public was a mix of old and young, much like the Italian producer’s music. Whether it was a track with Janet Jackson or Sia, there was something for everyone. As soon as the distinctive intro to Donna Summer’s Hot Stuff began to play, Moroder got the crowd pumped up, so that by the time he reached the chorus, everybody was up and down, singing their hearts out. With an enormous disco ball hanging from the ceiling, booming bass blasting out of the speakers and an interesting mix of people, the true beauty of music radiated the room.
Nobody expected one of his latest album’s duets to materalise on stage, however Grammy Award-winning British singer Foxes made a surprise appearance to perform Wildstar. It’s hard to say what was more spectacular: the energy the pair flooded the venue with or Foxes’ silver outfit. However, things dimmed down a bit when Moroder repeated part of the setlist, as if he had run out of songs to play. Flustered by the crowd’s booing, he demanded for audience suggestions a couple times but never played what they were really asking for. It wasn’t until desperate fans on the balcony began to chant “Electric dreams! Electric dreams!” that he finally played Together in Electric Dreams. The tension and frustration immediately vanished, and the room was filled with unified singing, putting a smile on his relieved face.
Despite the minor hiccups, Giorgio was called back for numerous encores, extending the show by over 20 minutes, to the audience’s delight. Dressed in black from head to toe, sporting a baseball cap on backwards, Giorgio Moroder truly proved that 74 Is the New 24 – there’s no such as thing as too old.
