Nicole Etienne: The Great Escape at Mead Carney Fine Art
Nicole Etienne is an American artist whose work has been exhibited in solo and group shows internationally. Her pieces have gained global recognition and are part of many prestigious collections, both private and corporate.
The Great Escape is a selection of Nicole Etienne’s most renowned paintings that, in many ways, embody the necessary elements of contemporary painting. It is immediately evident that her pieces deserve such international acknowledgment, as she is able to create visually striking paintings that have distinct individuality, challenging the viewer and engaging at a personal level. Her inspiration is derived from classical literature and mythology, which creates an obvious intimacy, engaging the viewer through dreamy landscapes and mysterious interiors.
The level of detail throughout her pieces is arguably fundamental in her creation of an ethereal environment, which seemingly merges the multiple aspects of life itself, and easily “materialise[s] sex, love, lust… whatever it is I am trying to provoke” (Nicole Etienne, 2013). Furthermore, her art is not limited to painting but also includes subtle mixed media and even a diamante-studded canvas that adds to the multiple layers of meaning and visual narrative, reinforcing the splendour of her works
Her unique style is seen throughout her pieces, notably in Pride and Prejudice (2015), which truly draws the viewer in. The clear contrast between the minute details and the dramatic beast that charges out towards the viewer creates a distinct effect. Etienne is able to create a reality that initiates a process of questioning and refinement of self-awareness, furthering the viewers’ interest.
Mead Carney Fine Art allows the viewer to truly appreciate the wondrous majesty of Etienne’s work and this solo exhibition presents her work in its entirety. The large open space gives visitors a viewpoint to admire the pieces from different positions, both up close and from afar. The surroundings allow easy interaction, with an ambiance that creates a journey, constantly transporting the audience from one world to another.
