Karigam autumn/winter 2016 collection catwalk show for NYFW

The “crown jewel” of artistic raw venues in Manhattan served as the showcase for the latest looks for Karigam. Though still fresh on the scene from her New York Fashion Week debut two years ago, Karina Gamez is already renowned for her sophisticated use of minimalist, architectural tailoring. Karina’s Venezuelan heritage was referenced in the title of her collection Salto Angel set as an exploration of the verdant beauty surrounding Venezuela’s Angel Falls. Green lights saturated the stark-white space, accented with lush floor bouquets of tropical greenery, creating a warm yet chic monochromatic environment. Utilising an immersive non-linear runway, the models created a stream-like flow pattern, cutting through embankments of fur-clad onlookers.

Geometric makeup and sleek, low-hanging ponytails gave a simple canvas against which the stunning artistry of the pieces could be displayed. The title theme was represented equally well in the color palette of the garments begin shown. Hues for the collection were kept within a narrow range. The colors being simple and natural, they accented “moon mist” neutral tones with cool, steely blues, mossy greens, and earthy coppers. Expertly tailored tuxedo jackets, skirts and straight-legged pants could be juxtaposed against the more couture geometric overcoats that moved in serpentine through the crowds.

High necklines were a staple of the show, being shown on most outerwear from blended wools. Asymmetrical shearling coats were highlighted with colored leather trims, while more simple jackets were accessorised with generously draped fur capes, ponchos, and silk scarves. A highlight of the collection, and its final look, was a white maxi dress with a Marsala shearling vest which caused quite the stir in the crowd, showing off the beautiful construction and tailoring the designer has become known for.

Karigam’s show was an interesting mélange of couture pieces and ready-to-wear pieces that would add a definitive statement to daily urban wear. The intense asymmetry and bold use of shape within each piece was inventive while still maintaining aspects classic female tailoring and silhouette.
