Chicago at New Wimbledon Theatre
With all of its glamour, dazzle and jazz, Chicago has come to London. The musical, named after the city in which it is set, is full to the brim with catchy songs and revealing outfits. Its story follows two young performers as they battle for the hearts of the people and the attention of the media. With a slew of sexual innuendo and short dresses, these two wannabe pop darlings delight the audience with raunchy song and dance.
The musical numbers in Chicago are boisterous and vocally impressive. However, many of the songs seem formulaic and have similar structure to the point that the audience could count down the end of a number. The co-stars sang beautifully but some of their accents seemed forced. The real standout was the orchestra which, in an interesting piece of set design, was seated center-stage. They played emotively and even made for a few humorous punchlines throughout the play.
Costumes were a little dull and sometimes threw off a scene’s cohesiveness. Relying heavily on mesh and the bodies of the performers, the outfits did not do much for the appeal of the actresses or even the play itself. Occasional changes to frumpier, more modest attire for the supporting actors while the stars were dancing and singing erotically made for an unsure and unappealing juxtaposition. Even so, the co-stars played their characters well and created enthralling moments.
Chicago is an exciting and fulfilling musical, studded with unforgettable songs and enthralling dances. The wardrobe and delivery were somewhat obtuse at times, but not at the expense of the pure fun that the production brings. Perfect for a night of debauchery.
