The Franklys at the Finsbury

Tucked away in a smoky back room in North London, there was something special brewing last night. Rock goddesses the Franklys took to the stage to perform to an eager crowd who dared to start the weekend early.

The all-girl quartet didn’t fail to please, roaring out ripping guitar riffs, head-banging beats and melodic yet powerful vocals. Every leather-jacketed rocker in the audience was forced to dance, as each song demanded viewers swing and nod along, even if they didn’t know the words.

The Franklys, consisting of drummer Nicole Pinto, Zoe Biggs on bass, Fanny Broberg (lead guitar), and fronted by Jen Ahlkvist (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), have a distinguished style that is distinctly feminine but decidedly bold. Highlights of the night included a stellar performance of new song My Love, which is causing a stir in the underground indie scene. Blonde hair flying everywhere, Jen captivated the crowd with her lyricism and composed ability to rock out while never missing a single beat.

This was a performance for the true punk-rockers: the mosh-pitters, the drink-throwers, the rock’n’rollers. Amid the thumping tunes and electric atmosphere, fans marvelled with true respect for their energetic and eccentric performance.

The intimate setting at the Finsbury allowed Ahlkvist to speak directly to the crowd between songs, adding a personal touch. However, their sound – and their name – are big enough for a larger, better known venue. The Franklys were a pleasure to watch, regardless.
