James Morrison at the Roundhouse

Derby-born musical sensation James Morrison was back to shake up London’s picturesque Roundhouse for a groovy Friday night. Having become an overnight sensation at the mere age of 21, Morrison has since released four studio albums, performed with artists such as Jason Mraz and Nelly Furtado, and stolen the hearts of millions of people.

Beginning with an oldie but a goodie, Morrison’s entrance was greeted by eager fans, as the catchy drum beats and piano keys of Under the Influence from his debut album Undiscovered filled the room. The stage, comprised of the man himself, his band, and his fierce backup singers, was decorated with an awe-inspiring illumination display. Often referred to as the British Stevie Wonder, Morrison belted out his raspy, enticing voice with rhythm and blues-inspired tunes Nothing Ever Hurt Like You and Stay Like This.

Reaching out into the crowd, dancing with no worry, he definitely pleased London with his hit tracks I Won’t Let You Go and Wonderful World. The passion and energy on stage were irresistible. The audience that was once politely listening, by now, was completely hypnotised by the soulful melodies, hands in the air, singing along to every word. From explaining his backstory to showing off his Michael Jackson impressions, Morrison made every effort to connect with his fans. With this, he pulled off an incredible rendition of bluesy tune Slave to the Music, enhanced with incredible harmonies and dirty guitar solos.

Bringing out his pop side, he treated the Roundhouse to recent smashes off his latest album Higher Than Here, such as Right Here and Easy Love, and not a still body was in sight. “I used to be a weirdo, I never felt like I belonged,” he told the crowd, “so thank you, from my heart, for always supporting me.” The emotion Morrison felt was clear, as he performed an acoustic version of Broken Strings, smiling as the room echoed with coordinated singing.

Finishing off the set with powerful performances of Demons and Call the Police, Morrison was immediately welcomed back by the keen crowd, spoiling them with a four-song encore. As soon as the first notes of You Give Me Something – the most anticipated track – began to play, the whole room was in a frenzy over his angelic voice. Ending off with a new song, Higher Than Here, Morrison left the crowd astounded and wanting more. The Midlands’ lad is every woman’s dream – talented, passionate and beautiful, and how someone could sound even better live, nobody knew.
