iPad Mini on its way?

The world’s biggest technology company, Apple, is set to launch a smaller-sized iPad device dubbed “iPad Mini” according to NetEase, a Chinese web portal.

The iPad Mini is set to be released in autumn this year in a bid to compete against its major tablet rivals Samsung and Microsoft.

If the rumours are true, then the new device is set to combine the elements of the iPhone and the iPad, the gadgets that helped establish Tim Cook as the new CEO of the company.

Six million units are reportedly set to hit the shelves with prices ranging from $249 to $300.

The speculation first surfaced a few weeks ago after The Korea Times published an article claiming Samsung had provided Apple with new LCD technology for smaller iPads.

An anonymous Samsung official told the paper that the new smaller iPad would have a screen measuring around 7.86in in contrast to its current model with its 9.7in screen.

Apple, however, refused to comment on the legitimacy of the rumours stating: “Apple does not comment on rumours or speculation.”

It is still unclear whether the iPad Mini will be classified as a cell phone or a tablet, but given Samsung’s success with the 5.3in Galaxy Note, Apple is bound to have high expectations with its new device in terms of sales.
