MTV Movie Awards 2016: Red carpet
The MTV Movie Awards are always a chance for the stars to be – shall we say – a little wild with their red carpet looks. In past years, we have seen Paris Hilton sport a turquoise bikini top and a super-bronzed body, Lindsay Lohan sparkle in a sequined jumpsuit, Lil’ Kim go (basically) topless and seen Sacha Baron Cohen wearing a particularly revealing leopard-print onesie.
However this year, the red carpet seemed considerably more tame than it has been in the past. Although there was still a hint of the daringly revealing looks and embellished ensembles for which the MTV Movie Awards have become known. Head-to-toe black was undoubtedly the most prominent trend on the red carpet: Lizzie Caplan bought the sparkle in a sequinned Sally La Pointe dress with a semi-sheer skirt, whilst Charlize Theron combined lace and glitter in a standout Alexander McQueen dress paired with heeled Jimmy Choo sandals.
A seductive lace panel at the waist of her black Noam Hanoch dress revealed Halle Berry’s enviable figure, whilst the mid-length skirt and demure Jimmy Choo heels kept the look feeling sophisticated.
Meanwhile, Kendall Jenner took the cut-out flesh-baring theme up a level in a Kristian Aadnevik gown with a daring lace-up split at the chest, and a skirt that stayed long at the back but was significantly shorter at the front. However, it was her thigh-high laced sandals from DSquared2 that really stole the show, and gave the outfit a statement finish.
However, some of the most sophisticated looks of the night were not dresses at all – model Gigi Hadid looked incredibly chic in a well-tailored Versace suit that only hinted at the Anine Bing bra beneath, proving that looking sexy does not always mean short skirts and strategic cut-outs. Finished with Tom Ford shoes and a Lili Caspe necklace, the model was the epitome of contemporary glamour with an edge.
Similarly, Cara Delevingne was the embodiment of her Bad Blood alter ego in a skin-tight black jumpsuit with seductive cut-outs in the bodice. Finished with Jimmy Choo heels and a dark lipstick, the look was modern vamp at its best.
The red carpet verdict: perhaps not as memorable as the MTV Movie Awards’ past, but hints of elegance with just enough edge featured to pack a sartorial punch.
