Astrid S at the Social

Norwegian singer/songwriter Astrid S plays her debut show in London to a heaving, jovial crowd at the Social, spilling out of the doors – most lucky to even get a glimpse at the stage. Fortunately, the sound engineering is well managed and penetrating enough to allow appreciation of the music in spite of many being wedged into a corner.

Her delicate tones and extensive range coupled with deep bass lines, create a very dynamic performance that has everyone bopping and swaying, particularly to Hyde, Jump, Hurts So Good and hit single 2AM. In essence, all of the songs are very similar, with emotional lyrics, heavy beats and layered harmonies swathed in complementary reverb and delay. The production has been well-thought, careful to deliver the intensity of the beats without drawing away from the vocals, and the interesting breaks allow the audience to take a moment to really appreciate what an accomplished voice the 19-year-old has.

The sound could be classified as a fusion of alternative pop, R’n’B and electronica, with vocals similar to the likes of Ellie Goulding, but with a more alternative edge to the musical composition. Although the music can quite easily be compared, Astrid’s buzzing enthusiasm and youthful energy on-stage create a far sweeter sentiment to the performance than, say, the intensity at a FKA Twigs gig or the more sombre tones that Lana Del Ray tends to evoke.

With a faultless performance under her belt and a great setlist, it is not difficult to predict that Astrid S will be selling out leading venues soon. Her endearing nature and genuine vitality make her an even more likeable contemporary artist and one to watch out for. If a live performance can be pulled off so well, considering all the effects and layering required, it will be very interesting to hear the production on the debut EP, which is due to be released next month.
