Birdy at the Roundhouse

The weather may have dampened a few moods, but spirits were definitely high at the Roundhouse last night. It marked the end of the first leg of Birdy’s European tour, before taking Beautiful Lies to North America. At the age of 19 and already promoting her third album, Birdy has never stopped making waves. Now, as she stands before us like a bohemian goddess, she is a woman – and there’s no stopping her.

Jasmine van den Bogaerde – the singer’s real name – soulfully howled her way through the set, mostly from the comfort of the grand piano that sat centre stage. Witnessing this young woman stand up, for the occasional song, seemed to be enough to make the crowd go wild: there are not many artist who have this power. It was a smooth, delicate and heartfelt performance, a very quiet and sincere “thank you” followed every song. It was a rather special atmosphere as the audience stood and swayed mesmerised by the other-worldly, angelic sounds filling the space.

Accompanied by her five-piece band, Birdy worked her way through her new album with songs like Wild Horses (which many of us will have seen performed at the BAFTAs) lighting up the audience like a glittering disco ball. She was completely in her element. Give up from the deluxe version of the album was powerfully performed and the words “you’ll never give up on me” echoed through the room; a perfect fit for her fans who, seven years since she won Open Mic UK at the age of 12, keep filling the concerts.

As the show went on the audience were treated to some classic Birdy covers, the most popular being her version of Bon Iver’s Skinny Love and the XX’s Shelter, both executed effortlessly and emotionally. However, the stand-out cover of the night came in the form of Fleet Foxes’ White Winter Hymnal, It was a superb decision and very respectfully adapted.

She returns at the end of the year to round off her Beautiful Lies tour; a talent like hers is a rare gift and witnessing Birdy live show is a delightful and moving experience.
