Natalia Osipova at Sadler’s Wells
Ballet’s very own power couple, Natalia Osipova and Sergei Polunin, have premiered their latest project at Sadler’s Wells. Alongside choreographers Sidi Larbi Cherkaoul, Russell Maliphant and Arthur Pita, two of the world’s most famous ballet dancers have mesmerised London audiences during the world premiere of the triple bill.
Russian superstar, Osipova, has ambitiously embraced a fresh contemporary style in contrast with her classical training. Throughout each of the three dances, the dancer energetically showcases extraordinary and graceful talent. From the beautiful to the unsettling, the show weaves together creative narratives through effortless and entrancing movements. Both performers and producers have successfully translated the beauty and elegance of traditional ballet for a modern audience.
Each dance in this triple bill, although incredibly different in narrative and style, captivated the audience. The final dance of the show, choreographed by Arthur Pita, draws inspiration from the late singer Amy Winehouse and her destructive relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil. The dark and dramatic, but sometimes humorous, story of a young rock‘n’roll couple certainly stands out from the two-hour contemporary ballet. But equally, the first two dances by choreographers Larbi Cherkaoul and Maliphant push the limits of ballet and amazed viewers with the versatility of the dancers.
This particular production is in London for a limited time only and will be returning to Sadler’s Wells in September following a run in Edinburgh. To see this incredibly talented couple perform in an innovative and imaginative series of dances, be sure to book your ticket in advance!
