Sushi lip art is taking over Instagram
One of the greatest things about platforms like Instagram and YouTube is that they allow anyone with an internet connection to share their make-up routines and experimentations with the world – no matter how wacky those might be. Over the last few years, we’ve seen a whole host of crazy beauty trends emerge and fade, but this latest one might be the most bizarre yet – yes, 2016 is the year of sushi lip art.
Striking a surreal balance between make-up, art and everyone’s favourite cuisine, this (slightly odd) new Instagram beauty obsession is only the latest a string of statement lip art trends; from Disney lips, floral lips, sparkling lips and everything beyond.
However, sashimi and rice-themed lips is probably the most unexpected social media fad yet – and maybe even one of the most time-consuming. LA-based make-up artist Vlada Haggerty, who has received over 81,000 views on the Boomerang video of her salmon nigiri lips, uses a complex combination of eye pencils, liquid liner and lipsticks to create the unique look.
Meanwhile, make-up artist Amanda Cadena has gone one step further in creating an entire series dedicated to food lip art. Not only has she transformed her lips into a California roll, she has also painted hot dogs, pizza, hamburgers and popcorn onto her face. It’s definitely not a trend for the faint of heart, but it sure makes for widespread Instagram acclaim.
Anyone who has the patience (and the bravery) to replace their standard pastels, berry tones and matte neutrals with wasabi and seaweed definitely has our respect. You never know – maybe fish lips will catch on.
