2 Become 1 at Underbelly
Swipe Right Theatre’s 90s-inspired pop musical returns to the Fringe for a second year running, following their overwhelming success last year.
2 Become 1 centres around four young women – Jess, Molly, Amanda and Charlie – as they embark on a night of speed dating in an attempt to console Jess following the recent end of her long-term relationship. Set to a soundtrack of 90s anthems, Spice Girls, Cher and Britney Spears to name a few, we follow the ladies on their journey to find “Mr Right”. Each of the actresses brings boundless energy to their performance, as well as impressive vocals, and it’s refreshing to see how much fun they are having just by being on stage. Although the space is limited, you truly get a sense of all of the different locations that they “visit” along the way.
The performance is filled with numerous references to the decade, some of which may go over the heads of younger viewers. Regardless, the infectious personalities of all four girls mean that everyone in the audience – young or old – will be rooting for them by the time the hour is up. The bond between the cast is clear, both when in character and in person, and this is a large reason why 2 Become 1 works so well.
This isn’t one of the most innovative of shows on offer during the Fringe, but for anyone looking for a reason to laugh for an hour, it’s the one to choose. By the end, spectators will either have rediscovered or developed a newfound understanding of 90s pop culture, and will be singing the songs over and over in their heads for hours. Oh, and be prepared for the inevitability of audience participation scattered throughout the performance!
