Jamie T – Trick
Jamie T has released his fourth album – his second record in two years – and it is testament to the South Londoner’s eclectic musical talent. Trick consists of 12 diverse songs that cover a strong array of genres.
From catchy punk (Tescoland), to pop (Dragon Bones), to rap (Drone Strike), Jamie T pays homage to a number of musical styles that have inspired him to date. From the opening track, Tinfoil Boy – one of the heavier tracks on the album – Trick takes listeners on a colourful and intimate journey right up to the closing tune, Self Esteem – a sadder and more delicate song that portrays a sense of defencelessness.
All of this genre-hopping and the unanticipated twists and turns in each song make for a thrilling listen. Jamie T’s usual dramatic beats bounce against more upbeat tempos in his latest release.
Even in spite of some of the more harrowing and violent lyrics – such as, “If I had a gun, I would blow my brains out,” in Dragon Bones – the album is, contrastingly, enjoyable to listen to. The sense of mystery from not knowing what is to happen next on this album grips you into listening to the whole thing more intuitively than you bargained for. There is something to cater for most tastes on Trick, but even the tracks that perhaps shock you more than the others also hold your attention.
Ultimately, Trick reinstated Jamie T as raw and exciting talent on the British alternative music scene. With his fourth album proving to be such an absorbing success, it will be interesting to see what the next few releases have in store.
