Namilia spring/summer 2017 collection catwalk show for NYFW
Namilia has been one of the most buzzed about newcomers this season. Known for pushing the sartorial envelope, designers Nan Li and Emilia Pfohl of Namilia were clear that they wanted a purpose behind their provocative fashions. The designers stated that they wanted to fight against the patriarchy by creating a fashion activist that rejects the idea of female objectification and embraces their sexuality. The theme of spring’s collection was “You’re Just a Toy,” the manifesto for which was waiting on the seats at The Gallery at Skylight Clarkson Square when show goers arrived. For those unfamiliar with the brand, who were making their first showing at New York Fashion Week, the manifesto gave a hint that what was to come was not going to be a traditional runway show.
The overall esthetic was that of the outsider, someone who pushes boundaries of both fashion and expected societal norms. Fetish wear was a strong theme in the collection including using latex as one of the fabrics and bondage style straps were used in numerous styles. Phallic imagery, a running theme in previous collections for the duo, also appeared frequently including being the basis for several bralette tops.
Many of the looks had a spirit of punk DIY with rips and tears and patches sewn on in an almost haphazard way. Outfits also included images of celebrities and printed slogans the largest of which was “Take Down Trump”.The designers are likely to be around for seasons to come and are already gaining popularity with some more fashion-forward celebrities – Kelly Osbourne sat front and centre outfitted in Namilia at the show.
