LaQuan Smith spring/summer 2017 collection presentation for NYFW
Kim and Kylie Kardashian, Beyoncé, Laverne Cox, Serena Williams, Kelly Rowland, Christina Milian and Winnie Harlow… what do all of these names have in common? LaQuan Smith. The designer of the stars debuted his spring/summer 2017 collection on the last day of fashion week at Spring Studios.
LaQuan Smith drew inspiration from “elements of nature: electrical storms, strong gusts of wing and the powerful bolts of lightning that precede wicked storms”. He connected the power of dark storms, brewing to unveil a collection that was electrifying to the natural eye.
The collection had a Yeezy vibe, and no wonder consider the buyers’ attraction. Many are body suits, body-con dresses and mixes of tight sheer materials in tones of the night sky. The hue of the calm after the storm – a light purple – was a staple of the collection. The deep dusk hue and lightening bolts of played well with the silhouettes. It was a play on the calm before and mayhem after the electric storm.
The dresses were a bit unconventional, as one showed a model’s entire right side of her chest and another was made out of fishnet but none the less they were sexual, body-conscious dresses. Traditionally, you would think that outfits of this nature would only look good on stick-thin women but as we have seen from his celebrity clientele, a full-figured woman can proudly show off her curves in a LaQuan Smith piece.
The models were styled with long braids down their fronts, matte makeup and either over-the-knee boots or strappy sandals. This gave each look a ready-to-wear feel, as we have seen this done in many street style blogs and is very popular on online platforms such as Instagram. The collection will soon be sold on their website, check it out for more from this up-and-coming designer.
