Bora Aksu spring/summer 2017 collection catwalk show for LFW

Bora Aksu’s spring-summer 2017 collection was inspired by the childhood of the designer’s grandmother, and her home in the countryside by the Aegean Sea.

A certain emotion and admiration shone through in a beautifully evocative collection that hinted at a long ago childhood in a faraway place. 

The detailed embroideries and careful pleats took direct inspiration from the designer’s own handmade dresses. Romantic to the point of being ethereal, these touches added to the overall vintage feel of the collection whilst referencing a very particular heritage.The impressive floral crowns had a childlike, Alice in Wonderland-esque quality, but they retained a very grown-up edge thanks to the luxurious fabrics. Delicate silk tulle and organza contrasted with the heavier brocades to create the perfect interplay between light and shade, infusing this light and airy collection with just the right amount of darkness. As for the colours, they were a flower garden all of their own. Hand-embroidered fabrics and woven lace seemed to glow in pale blue, white, yellow, cherry pink and tangerine. Meanwhile, a series of black dresses had a decidedly goth-inspired, Victoriana feel. It was a beautiful show characterised by a series of striking oppositions: the modern and the traditional, the dream-like and the real, the child and the grown-up. 

“She inspired me…to keep my innerchild and joy alive through difficult times,” said Bora Aksu of his grandmother. After watching the show that she inspired, it’s hard not to feel the same.
