Angel Chen always has an eccentric character in mind and this season, it was no different. For her SS17 collection, she let her imagination run wild by channeling Shan Hai Jing, an historic text depicting various mythical monsters. This is not the first time the designer has produced the pleasantly unexpected as her past collections involved the exploration of Asian subcultures and even touching on wedding themes. Though still considered an emerging artist – having graduated just two years ago – Chen has made quite the impression on the industry in a relatively short space of time and this showcase was no different. Heavily embroidered kimonos, sequinned pants and bright, tasseled A-line dresses brought these dainty monsters to life as they paced up and down the catwalk. The overall colour palette touched on soft pinks, pastel greens and creams, all of which were juxtaposed by strong reds. She mixed Chinese heritage with craft innovation and made use of modern fabrics and silhouettes, never shying away from moving up tight and personal or straying as far as possible from the female form.
