Tom Odell at Brixton Academy

Singer-songwriter Tom Odell was back in London for his much-anticipated show. Since releasing his debut EP Songs from Another Love in 2012, the talent from Chichester, England has put out two studio albums and has had his music featured in several films and TV shows.

Donning a sharp navy blue suit, Tom Odell sat down at his piano and warmed the night up with Still Getting Used to Being on My Own off his latest album, Wrong Crowd, released earlier this year. Illuminated by the neon frames and peculiar cheetah backdrop, the 25-year-old didn’t hold back, belting out every word. Accompanied by his groovy guitarist and bassist, irresistible backing vocalist and two powering drummers, the group was a dynamic assemblage. I Know from debut album Long Way Down and the first track off Wrong Crowd followed. Between passionate singing, hip shaking and romantic embracing, the room watched intently, falling more in love with the young heartthrob with every word he sang. As soon as Concrete came on, the sold-out venue was flooded with thousands of constellation lights, pulling the audience into a heavenly utopia.

From eerie Can’t Pretend to upbeat Sparrow to feel-good dance track Here I Am, Tom Odell had something for everybody. An infectious smile was engraved on the musical sensation as the crowd’s overwhelming enthusiasm and resounding harmonious singing during Heal took over Brixton. “This one’s for that c***, Donald Trump,” he announced, as he serenaded everybody with Real Love. From the middle-aged couples swaying in the back to the teenage devotees bouncing in the front, both Grow Old with Me and Hold Me united everybody, as a blanket of joy and love swept over the hall. When the much-anticipated hit Another Love started to play, fans erupted with elation. Standing on top of his piano, clapping away and beaming with happiness, the indie pop singer performed with beautiful vitality as his angelic voice rang through every corner of the venue.

Forced back on stage by the ear-deafening cheers and claps, Tom Odell returned to play stunning renditions of Till I Lost and Somehow. His flawless yet occasionally rough voice resembled Hozier’s, while his pretty boy blonde locks and classy style made him look like royalty – what was not to love about this talent? As Odell finished off with Magnetised, the audience’s contagious dancing amongst confetti, the heavy beats and powerful vocals left Brixton in a feel-good high.
