Lacoste autumn/winter 2017 collection catwalk show for NYFW
Set on a futuristic moonscape of a runway, Lacoste presented an autumn/winter collection with an intergalactic overtone. Titled Back to the Future, the show actually drew from several themes to create a beautifully cohesive and modern collection.
Designer Felipe Oliveira Baptista’s major inspiration, as seen in both the clothing and the runway, was the idea of air and space travel. The designer used artistic representations of space in artwork on jackets and metallic accents but not all of the pieces were so literal. The theme was also seen in the functionality and detail put into the clothing: an idea taken from the ingenuity of the space suit. This came across most clearly in the beautifully tailored leather jackets that were the perfect combination of form and function.
To temper the space theme the designer also took a page from some of the shapes seen in 90s grunge. The influence appeared in the oversized check patterns and slouchy sweaters that looked both comfortable and luxurious. However, this idea was at its absolute best in an updated version of a baggy track pant that became an easy-to-wear flowing pant with a clean graphic stripe.
These two disparate themes came together seamlessly in Baptista’s capable hands and resulted in an effortless elegance. Case in point, one of the most successful silhouettes was a pair of the slouchy 90s-inspired pants juxtaposed against a very fitted version of a bomber jacket. This outfit perfectly illustrated the designer’s idea that luxury is not just a look, but a way of being.
