Francesca Liberatore autumn/winter 2017 collection catwalk show for NYFW

Francesca Liberatore took the audience on a journey of power and politics; it delved into the impact of speech and how the idea of freedom of speech impacts the lives of millions.

This collection was reminiscent of the 90s, and the bold colours juxtaposed with a loose militaristic style was an ambitious combination. Liberatore utilised different materials and garments, and the breadth in which she covered was tremendous. Her tasteful collaboration of soft and heavy fabrics highlights her interest in the idea of a power struggle. This therefore embarks on the viewer to examine the world that they live in further. It is an exemplary exposition of the power of the fashion industry.

This collection perfectly executed an ideal match of the feminine and the powerful.  The strength was implemented through the luxe velvets and darker colours, while sensuality was derived from lace overlays and detailing. The ability for the designer to corroborate the seemingly apposed aesthetics into one cohesive collection is astounding. This is detailed in the construction of lace bustiers and drapery in cohesion with heavier materials.

The idea of the powerful female was also exhibited in the detail elements of graphic stripes and fur. While both are playful elements, the assembly of these materials adds to the simplistic nature of structure-inspired wear. The different variants of pink and purple stripes displayed on both tops and bottoms, throws it back a few decades; therefore, instilling a sense of nostalgia within the viewer. The furry detail in a simple coat makes all the difference in raising the piece to a new height by adding an element of drama.

The extensive materials, sheens and fabrics that were implanted within this collection speak to the varieties in which the artist can experiment with. This too speaks to the ability of fashion to appeal to all aspects of life and therefore to the world around us. It offers viewers a chance to examine their world through fashion.
