Marcel Ostertag autumn/winter 2017 collection catwalk show for NYFW

The Revolution Collection designed by Marcel Ostertag pin-pointed the vibe of the urban woman. The minimal, simplistic makeup and the slick hair served as a perfect blank canvas for Ostertag to construct his version of businesswoman: one who is both sleek and sophisticated yet effortless and sporty. He utilises basic colours, keeping his eye focused on green, brown and purple hues, while instilling red accents in the way of belts. The basic fabrics allowed the designer to play with different constructions and different materials. The diversity plays into the political idea that was at the forefront of this collection. While Emma Watson’s speech about gender equality plays in the background, the notion of feminism is evocated and the models walk the runway with pure confidence.

The different textures were executed seamlessly throughout the collection. Ostertag utilises different patterns of design in conjunction with different fabrics. This allows for a wide variety amongst his simple composition of silhouettes. Ruffles were a big ornamentation throughout this collection. In the simplistic nature of the collection, this adds not only drama but femininity as well.

The geometric patterns, too, added depth to the basic pieces; the fact that these bold statements did not interfere or distract from the overall appeal, speaks to Ostertag’s ability to refine. He knows how far to push the limits of fashion without overwhelming the audience or going overboard.

Variations of texture were provided throughout the collection. While still keeping the cohesive nature, the designer was able to implement seemingly contrasting materials. The metallic nature of some of the pieces worked effortlessly with the sweater materials that were also introduced.

They were seamlessly layered on top of one another, and the ways in which the light reflected off the translucent pieces in conjunction with the more opaque styles was breath taking. The metallic vibrancy in subtle tones also elevated the height of the straightforward construction of the styles.

Despite the assortment of materials and patterns utilised, the interconnected nature of the collection remained intact. The pieces exuded the unifying theme of feminism, and the diversity only added to this idea. In doing so, Ostertag was able to create a defined woman who is powerful and playful.
