Marta Jakubowski autumn/winter 2017 collection presentation for LFW

Marta Jakubowski’s new collection is a trip straight back to the 80s with a refreshing take on a bold but nevertheless soft femininity. She succeeded in presenting her own version of power-dressing that fully owned the strong colours chosen for this collection without having to rely on exaggerated and often unflattering padded shoulders.

The setting was a dark room, Tina Turner’s What’s Love Got to Do playing in the background, and the models placed against the backdrop of heavy velvet curtains in the main colours of the collection: black, purple, red, pink, orange and yellow. The looks were sleek and elegant, yet with a youthful edge. It was reminiscent of her SS17 collection, featuring similar colours and fabrics, but this felt much more grown-up and refined.

The Royal College of Art graduate introduced fluid tailored and mono-coloured suits in pink and black were that tied at the waist, with voluminous trousers and deep necklines. The same trousers were also paired with velvet turtlenecks that were cropped and tied just below the bust, baring just enough midriff to still be chic rather than overly sexy.

The same velvet tops were freed of the constricting neck in other places, baring the shoulders instead of the waist, but still paired with bottoms that will undoubtedly suit every woman in every shape. Equally flattering were the black cropped culottes that had a layer of tulle peeking out at the hem. This playful element of hidden tulle could also be seen in a pink, asymmetrical coat that moonlighted as a dress; the front long, the back cheekily shortened to just below the hips.

Tina Turner turned into Sade crooning Sweetest Taboo, which was perhaps suitable for the puffer jacket dresses in purple and pink; one short and exposing the shoulders, the other sleeveless, asymmetrical and slim.

With the models only wearing minimal, delicate gold jewellery to showcase the bold colours and equally bold and artful makeup of red and blue eyeshadow, it is not hard to imagine that these bright and easy-to-wear pieces will be donned by many working ladies in the cities of the world.
