Mimi Tran autumn/winter 2017 collection catwalk show for LFW
Mimi Tran’s new autumn/winter catwalk show opened with a sequinned black and gold tuxedo-style suit while, in the background, a “girl power” song evoked the idea of “me and my girls” – linking to Tran’s passion for empowering women.
The looks were confident, elegant and sophisticated in fashion, blurring the line between traditional and modern with motifs of vivid colours and techniques, making the line more futuristic than her previous collections.
Rich fabrics like 3D lace and digitally printed silk were used to celebrate beauty and femininity with form-fitting midi dresses and flowing maxi dresses. Off the shoulder, one shoulder and long sleeves could be seen accentuating sensuous feminine curves. Luxuriant materials like silk and gold hand crafted ornamentation made the collection sensuous, exclusive and unforgettable.
Elements of the collection strayed from the colour palette Mimi usually adapots, with pops of vibrant neons in orange, green and blues. These appeared in the form of sequinned crystal encrusted flowers and on digitally printed silk thigh-high split garments. Favourable mention goes to a dress with contrasting black skirt style which juxtaposes the sequinned sleeves in red, neon green and royal blue. The long free-flowing natural hair did little to distract from these details and instead brought further attention to the sheer elements and tulle trains. The black – gold and neon – decorated garments resonated the vibe of girl power that the up beat music preached.
As the antithesis of this, a haunting rendition of Immortal by Marina and the Diamonds filled the Freemason’s Hall whilst models flaunted Grecian-looking dressed. The sequinned encrusted flowers featured here too in silver and white, contrasting to the earlier bright neons. Recurring ideas of purity, glamour and immortal life were evident in the song choice and the looks with jewels, pearls, sequins and lace. The star of the show was the final look of a floral appliqué mid-sleeve ball gown-style dress, complete with large glittering crown. Coupled with the floral motifs that appeared through the collection, the jewelled crown stole the eye of the audience.
The themes of women empowerment, luxury and contemporary design came together in the capable hands of Mimi Tran. The rich fabrics and minimal accessories meant all attention was drawn to the hand bearing, floral motifs and sequinned crystal designs. The juxtaposition between the gold and black, neon and white pieces cleverly outlined the confident and impressive woman that Mimi Tran aspires to dress.
