Yuna Yang autumn/winter 2017 collection catwalk show for NYFW

 

Yuna Yang’s autumn/winter 2017 show took place in an intimate comedy club where everyone in attendance was able to get a close view of the detailed collection.  The season was titled Lights in the Shadow and was based on the idea that even in the darkest times there is power in one person holding the light – a nod to the political climate in both Korea and the United States.  

Showing this political view through her fashion, Yang’s clothing was a mixture of dark and light with sparkling embellishments.  The clothing had an overall vintage vibe, most strongly referencing the 1970s with pieces including a leather trench coat lined with nubby faux fur.  There were also long loose silhouettes in velvet dresses that had hippy vibes and an overall layered outfit that contributed to the feel of that era.  

The juxtaposition of multiple fabrics – from leather to lace – gave a rich textural feel to the collection. There were a few daywear pieces but most of the collection tended toward eveningwear and outerwear – both of which were very successful. The addition of shimmering accents to the neckline of tops made for an easy modern look since it eliminated the need for a lot of jewellery as well as going back to the theme of being, or in this case reflecting, the light.

Yang’s collection concluded with a dramatic red velvet dress that felt like a fitting tribute to women who are using their clothes to signal that they are boldly letting their light shine out into the darkness.
