Our guide to London Food Month
With over 400 events and counting planned with London Food Month, it’s all starting to get a bit overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together this list of – in our opinion – the very best events throughout LFM. From fine dining to fish curing, there’s something for everyone. But first things first: what is London Food Month?
London Food Month
It’s a month-long celebration of the London food scene, organised by the Evening Standard. As we mentioned before, there will be hundreds of events taking place: some officially and some others unofficially. The two main happenings are the Night Market and the Refectory Felix, but these are so large-scale that we’ve dedicated separtare articles to them.
Smoking and Curing Workshop at Craft London
A rare chance to get some hands-on guidance about these two cornerstones of the charcuteries process. It might not be fine dining, but LFM is about embracing all aspects of food culture, including the basic but satisfying joys of smoking a side of fish, taking it home and devouring it, quietly smug in the knowledge that you’re responsible for the delicious dish you’re eating.
Smoking and Curing Workshop is at Craft London, Peninsula Square London SE10 0SQ, on 3rd June 2017, for further information or to book visit here.
The Big Middle Eastern Tea
A Middle Eastern afternoon tea from the restaurant arm of the beloved Honey and Co. Expect perfect mint tea, cheesecakes and the café’s usual exceptional pastries. There’ll be Turkish coffee aplenty too, as well as some more savoury options.
The Big Middle Eastern Tea is at Honey & Smoke, 216 Great Portland Street W1W 5QW, on Fridays and Saturdays throughout June 2017, for further information or to book visit here.
CHEFstock
Michelin starred Alyn Williams is bringing CHEFstock back, better than ever. A star-studded lineup that includes no lesser names than Anton Kovalkov, Davide Scabin, Tim Hollingsworth and 2017’s World’s Best Female Chef Ana Ros, this one seems to have slipped under the radar for many. With a stunning eight course menu every Wednesday, it’s sure to be one of LFM’s absolute highlights.
CHEFstock is at Alyn Williams at The Westbury, 37 Conduit St London W1S 2YF, on Wednesdays throughout June 2017, for further information or to book visit here.
Benares Does Lunch
Atul Kochhar is whipping up a thoroughly modern taken on British/Indian cuisine once more. The chef’s stunning restaurant is always a reliable favourite, but here guests will get a chance to sample something thoroughly seasonable: think crispy quinoa, barbequed pineapple and all the best aspects of June’s produce.
Benares Does Lunch is at Benares, 12a Berkeley Square W1J 6BS, on 7th June 2017, for further information or to book visit here.
Daniel Galmiche Show You Borough Market
If Borough Market has a flaw, it’s that there’s too much choice at times. So many incredible offerings, but how to know which ones are truly special? Well, look no further. Michelin-starred Daniel Galmiche will be showing the very best of the day’s produce, telling you exactly what to look for and then whisking you off to the Gore Hotel where he’ll whip said ingredients up into lunch.
Daniel Galmiche Shows You Borough Market is at 190 Queens Gate by Daniel Galmiche, 190 Queen’s Gate SW7 5EX, on 7th and 21st June 2017, for further information or to book visit here.
The Cheese Bus
The Cheese Bar’s dedication to all things dairy had our attention before we had even stepped through the door. The sheer ridiculousness of it only added to the appeal and now they’re taking things a step further. Fitting out an old Routemaster bus with a trio of experts and as many hungry foodies as they can ram in, they’ll be taking guests on a tour of London’s underground cheese scene (no, really).
The Cheese Bus is at Camden Market NW1 8AL on 9th June 2017, for further information or to book visit here.
Dinner by Heston Blumenthal
Or in this case, lunch. With a number of set lunches inspired by Britain’s culinary history, matched wine pairings and Ashley Palmer Watts’s usual skill, this is a great chance for diners to sample something a bit different from one of the capital’s most respected restaurants.
Dinner by Heston is at Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, 66 Knightsbridge SW1X 7LA, throughout June 2017, for further information or to book visit here.
Moro Original Menu
Marie Claire Food Editor Laura Jackson tipped us to go and check out Moro during the quieter Sunday period when we chatted with her at the opening of LFM, but expect Sundays to be anything but, thanks to this special event. Going back to the original menu, from 20 years ago no less, Moro is going to make us party like it’s 1997 and we couldn’t be happier.
Moro Original Menu is at Moro, 34-36 Exmouth Market EC1R 4QE, on 11th, 18th and 25th June 2017, for further information or to book visit here.
Nundo’s Piri Piri Chicken Pop-up
Ah Nuno Mendes. If anyone else proposed opening a cheeky take on the cheekiest restaurant around, our eyes would roll so far into our head we’d be permanently blind. But there’s something about the impish Portuguese that makes this oddly charming. A one-day pop-up at his relaxed Spitalfields venue, expect the Piri Piri chicken to be sensational.
Nundo’s Piri Piri Chicken Pop-up is at Taberna do Mercado,107b Commercial Street E1 6BG, on 13th June 2017, for further information or to book visit here.
Nieves Barragan and Jose Etura’s Pop-up
In many ways the heart and soul of the wildly successful Barrafina, the Spanish duo stepped away to go on a solo venture earlier this year. The prospect is tantalizing, but as of yet details are vague. So it’s exhilarating to learn that, for one night only, there’s a chance to sample upcoming dishes from the restaurant.
Nieves Barragan and Jose Eura Pop-up is at Craft London, Peninsula Square London SE10 0SQ, on 16th June 2017, for further information or to book visit here.
The Palomar vs Machneyuda
Two Israeli legends meet in this inspiring pair of dinners. Tomer Amedi will be be cooking alongside his close friend and mentor Uri Navon in what has to be considered an unmissable meal for anyone.
The Palomar vs Machneyuda is at The Palomar, 34 Rupert Street W1D 6DNon, on 26th and 27th June 2017, for further information or to book visit here.
Le Gavroche: Three Generations of Roux
A once in a lifetime chance to dine with three generations of the legendary Roux family. Michel and Albert will be at the table with diners, whilst rising talent Emily prepares the meal itself. The chance to pick the legendary duo’s brains is one that you just can’t miss, but it’s also an intriguing opportunity to sample the talents of the young up-and-comer to see if she really does have the same spark as her father and grandfather.
Three Generations of Roux is at Le Gavroche, 43 Upper Brook Street W1K 7QR, on 28th June 2017, for further information or to book visit here.
Fortnum’s Midnight Food Hall Feast
Exactly what it says on the tin, which is probably why tickets are like gold dust. Try your best to get ahold of one though, because the halls of the iconic department store will be transformed for a single night, lit with candles and stuffed with some of the most sumptuous food you’ve ever seen.
Fortnum’s Midnight Feast is at Fortnum and Mason, 181 Piccadilly W1A 1ER, on 30th June 2017, for further information or to book visit here.
The Gladwin’s Farmed and Foraged Menu
A celebration of British wild and foraged foods, in one of the best months for that kind of food, this is shaping up to be a great menu. The Gladwin Brothers’ trio of restaurants are known for their fusion of style, simplicity and beautiful produce, and this collection of some of the best bits of their Sussex farm is sure to be a hit.
The Gladwin’s Framed and Foraged Menu is at The Shed: 122 Palace Gardens Terrace W8 4RT, Rabbit: 172 King’s Road SW3 4UP or Nutbourne: 35-37 Parkgate Road SW11 4NP, throughout June 2017, for further information or to book visit here.
